LASIK's Benefits

It's sometimes easy to forget how much we contribute to improving the quality of life for our patients. I was reminded of this fact on Friday by a gentleman in his 50's for whom we performed LASIK earlier this year. He was farsighted (hyperopic) and needed glasses for basically everything he did. We first saw him in the Fall of 2010 for a Laser Vision consult.  While we felt hyperopic LASIK correction was appropriate, I noted an unusal lesion on one of his eyes. My concern was for a rare cancer of the ocular surface. We postponed laser vision until the lesion was removed. Fortunately, it was benign. Several months later, we performed laser vision not only to correct farsightedness, we also planned a blended, or monovision, result.  As of last week, he is completely free from glasses for both distance and near vision. While he was very happy with his outcome, he was even more appreciative of our care in terms of his eyes', and ultimately his, health.
