Baltimore Ophthalmologists on Glaucoma Awareness Month

Prevent Blindness America has designated January as National Glaucoma Awareness Month. “Baltimore Washington Eye Center patients should be particularly sensitive to the fact that in African-American and Hispanic populations, glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness-with increasing numbers of patients being diagnosed with glaucoma each year,” noted Baltimore Ophthalmologist Arturo Betancourt, M.D. “We are more cautious than ever about carefully evaluating patients for concurrent risk factors that have typically included diabetes and family history-but now we know that other systemic conditions related to cardiovascular disease, obstructive sleep apnea and even perimenopausal hormonal changes can suggest a greater risk of glaucoma in certain patients,” shared Brad Spagnolo, M.D., Ophthalmologist at Baltimore Washington Eye Center.

“While the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force has been unable to come up with firm recommendations on the need and frequency of glaucoma screening, those of us actively involved in the day to day care of patients know beyond any shadow of a doubt that the key step in preventing vision loss from glaucoma is early detection, diagnosis and treatment”, said Dr. Betancourt. “Preserving eye health and vision is especially critical for our aging population-especially baby boomers who hopefully will experience an extended life expectancy and need to maintain their quality of life,” further explained Dr. Spagnolo.
